Meet Kitt
Clay is a large part of my life.
A few years ago I took a pottery class, and then I took another one. I bought bags of clay. I purchased tools. I took group lessons and private lessons, I attended workshops, and arranged for workshop presenters to present in my town. I acquired a wheel. I learned that it's possible for the process to center me, even before I shape the clay. I learned that at times what I think I am doing, and then what actually happens, turn out to be two different things. And I've learned that that can be a good thing.
Tantalized with possibilities, I found I could make little things, awkward things, chunky things, fine things, elegant things, useful things, artistic things, things like vases, pitchers, bowls, plates, candlesticks, and containers for the kitchen and garden. I don't make things to challenge the viewer; my goal is to make things that are agreeable objects.
I continue to make pottery drawing from my personal experiences of the world, and I find immense satisfaction in making intentionally functional, beautiful things. These days, I'll walk out to my clay space in the early mornings, coffee in hand, checking on the welfare of a piece slipped and scored the night before, and when I look up at the clock, it's noon.
